Students at a University Center Halloween party were given a small fright last night. According to public safety and FDNY officials at the scene, mist from a fog machine during MuMufest, an annual Halloween-themed costume party put on by P.A.R.E., LASO, the African Students' Association and other student groups, triggered the building's fire alarm.
Dozens of Discover New York (DNY) students currently have their artwork on display in St. Augustine Hall. The exhibit, a book show, began Oct. 1 and ends this week. Each book is student-produced and was created in photography professor Belenna Lauto's previous DNY classes.
St. John's is gearing up for Hunger Awareness Month, which starts Nov. 1. The events planned throughout the month are sponsored by different departments within the University, including Campus Ministry, Multicultural Affairs and the Department of Student Wellness.
A recent Vatican invitation to Anglicans has been met with mixed reviews from the St. John's Catholic community. The announcement, made by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 25, means members of the Anglican church can now practice the Catholic faith and be allowed to keep their traditions.
Students presented their concerns about the University to President Fr. Donald Harrington and administration at a town hall meeting Oct. 21. Some of the suggestions made this year included concerns with smoking on campus, large pharmacy classes, the class schedule change and the quality of food on campus.
St. John's students are giving back this holiday season. For the second year in a row, students in Professor Jane Paley's Seminar in Public Relations Campaigns course are organizing a toy drive, which will officially begin in November. Last year, she said they collected more than 850 toys.
