Storm take two from Pitt
St. John's took two games out of three in the weekend series with two dominant wins on Saturday

pounding Pittsburgh with a decisive
15-1 victory at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Red Storm (20-12, 8-4 Big
East) won the weekend series against
Pittsburgh (15-16, 8-6) 2-1, improving
their all-time record against Pitt to 22-
3 in 25 meetings against the Panthers.
The game was over shortly after it
began as junior third baseman Gil
Zayas sparked the offense with a solo
homerun in the second inning and a
three RBI hit in a huge collective ninerun
effort in the fourth inning. Zayas
igned the offense and gave the Red
Storm an early 10-0 lead by the bottom
of the fourth inning.
Everyone contributed. "[The team]
had clutch hits and doubles," said
coach Ed Blankmeyer of the last game
against Pitt. "[With] nine runs in an
inning, the game is pretty much over."
St. Johns went on to score five
more runs in the next three innings.
Junior lefty George Brown pitched
one of his best games of the season,
giving up only one run and a leadoff
double in the first inning, holding the
Panthers for the rest of the game to just
one more runner in scoring position.
In 7.1 innings of play, Brown had
four strike-outs, no walks, allowed
seven hits and gave up one run early in
the first inning.
Zayas went four-for-five with four
runs and four RBIs and hit his third
and fourth homeruns of the season.
"It was his first time hitting two
homeruns in a single game,"
Blankmeyer said. "He tied the game in
the first and made the game out of
reach in the fourth."
Junior outfielder Chris Anninos,
the teams leader in batting (.484),
slugging (.710), and on-base percentage
(.556) in conference play, went
two-for-four and had four RBIs.

his best outing of the season, tossing a
complete game four hitter in game one
of a double header against Pittsburgh
Saturday.
