Today is the last chance to view the annual Faculty Art Exhibit, which features work from numerous professors from the Fine Arts Department. A reception was held on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at the Geoffrey Yeh Art Gallery in Sun Yat Sen Hall to commemorate the exhibit.
With the political season in full swing, St. John's Participate in '08 initiative hopes to further educate student voters on the positions of state and federal political candidates. As part of that effort, organizers have enlisted the services of the Project Vote Smart Bus on the Queens and Staten Island campuses as part of its national tour.
A host of events between today and Saturday will mark the celebration of Homecoming 2008. Previously, in 2002, the idea of Homecoming was halted due to the extermination of the University's football program. However, it was re-implemented in 2006 without the football team.
In an attempt to expand its presence in Europe, St. John's is moving its Rome campus to a new, more spacious facility. A mass on the new Rome campus featuring members of the St. John's Board of Trustees, Board of Governors will be held Oct. 12, followed by a Blessing and Dedication Celebration to christen the new building.
Student Government (SGI) introduced its freshman representatives and continues to review applications from groups seeking to be recognized as legitimate University organizations. SGI President Dana Lezama confirmed that the freshman class representative election held during the beginning of the semester had record-breaking numbers at the polls.
More than 70 students participated in the 8th Annual Latin Culture Day Celebration, Friday October 3 in the UC Storm Center and Council Hall, the gathering was meant to educate students on Latin culture and traditions. According to a new policy, first semester freshman are not allowed to rush for any Greek organization. The Division of Student Affairs implemented the policy this semester, affecting all Greek organizations on campus. Freshman can rush in their second semester.
After attending a lecture on breast cancer awareness, students walked away with more knowledge about early detection of the disease. A St. John's priest was arrested and arraigned on charges Friday after allegedly emailing two obscene videos of himself to what he thought was a 13-year-old boy, said authorities. According to news outlets, Rev. Charles Plock, 63, a University youth minister and chaplain, was released on $150,000 bail after being arrested in his on-campus apartment.
Rev. Charles Plock, the St. John's priest who was arrested last week in an online sting operation, has been fired, said University officials. "As of last Friday, he is no longer employed with the University," said Dominic Scianna, Director of Media Relations.
Many St. John's students are feeling the effects of the recent economic crisis, both in terms of their employment and college affordability. "It's scary," said junior Nikko Smith. "They cut my hours at work, so I've been affected." Smith said that he may have to get another job in order to pay his bills, and is even considering transferring for a semester or two to a state or city school to save money.
Last week (September 28-October 4) was St. John's annual wellness week. This year wellness week featured events such as Super Foods at Montgoris, the student wellness fair and a lecture by Jean Kilbourne. These events where aimed at making students smarter both physically and mentally.
St. John's kicked off their annual Homecoming event with "I Heart STJ Fest" on Wednesday, October 8 in Marillac Terrace. Student Programming Board (SPB) President Laura Yacinthe was excited to see a big turn out of students waiting anxiously on line to get in.
