The St. John’s women’s soccer team recorded their first Big East win of the season after defeating Rutgers 1-0 Friday night at Belson Stadium.

“I’m so proud of the effort tonight,” said St. John’s head coach Ian Stone in a press release.

“It was a rough couple of weeks and I give our team a lot of credit that we continued to keep our heads up. The Cincinnati game last Friday was a heartbreaker, losing in the last two seconds after we had a couple chances to win and we suffered early on in the Louisville game because of that. Tonight, we came out and played our hardest against a very good Rutgers team with some great players; and we were fortunate to get a good result.”

Sophomore midfielder Deanna Murino scored the lone goal of the game in the 18th minute when Rutgers (8-5-0, 1-4) goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins was only able to get a hand on Murino’s blistering shot, allowing it to fall into the net.

The Red Storm’s (5-7-0, 1-4) offense was lead by the sophomore goal scorer for most of the night, who played 83 minutes and took three shots.

However, Amy Marron had the biggest impact for the Johnnies as she kept Canadian international and Olympic bronze medalist Jonelle Filigno in check for most of the match.

Filigno was left frustrated as the physicality of Marron and the Red Storm defense prevented her from finding an offensive rhythm.

Marron played the full 90 minutes at center back despite usually being stationed in the center of midfield. When asked why she thought she was placed on defense, she responded, “it was best for the team.”
