Mulligan Signs With Cosmos

After his impressive collegiate career came to a close this past fall, St. John’s midfielder Jimmy Mulligan will now be taking his talents to the professional level, as he signed a contract with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League last week.

Mulligan, who grew up in Medford, N.Y., sounded ecstatic about the prospect of playing for his hometown team next year.

“As a New Yorker I’m thrilled to be signing with the Cosmos and for the opportunity to play for a team with such a revered history,” Mulligan said in a statement released Friday.

For Red Storm fans, this signing likely comes as no surprise considering Mulligan’s success this past season. He netted a career-high four goals in 2013, including two game-winners, and finished the season second among all Red Storm players with 10 points.

Mulligan’s success last season earned him the honor of being named third team NSCAA All-Northeast Region and second team All-Big East. As a captain, he led the Red Storm to an 11-7-2 record and an NCAA Tournament victory over Delaware.

Mulligan finished his St. John’s career with eight goals and nine assists for a total of 25 points. He was an ironman for the Red Storm throughout his career, as he appeared in all 80 of the team’s games in the past four seasons, starting 66 of them.

The Cosmos opened up their season this week as they look to defend their 2013 NASL Championship.
