Old named Big East defender of the week

St. John’s sophomore defender Steven Old was named the Big East defender of the week for the second time this season after helping the Red Storm blank Louisville 4-0 Saturday night at Belson Stadium.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jason Landers was named to the Big East honor roll for his part in posting the team’s fourth straight shutout and sixth of the season.

Old and the St. John’s back line limited the Cardinals to just two shots on goal Saturday, the fourth time in five league games an opponent has had two shots on goal or less, and no corner kicks.

It held Louisville forwards David Guzman and Frank Jonke, the team’s top scorers and two of the conference’s top six shot takers, to a combined three shots (one shot on goal).

Landers needed to make just two saves to help move the Red Storm unbeaten streak to six games and his own shutout streak to four games. The last time the sophomore goalkeeper allowed a goal was an own goal in a 2-1 win over No. 14 Notre Dame (Sept. 16).
