Roberts inks prep star

Versatility seems to be the word of choice to describe St. John’s recruits. Qa’rraan Calhoun won’t be any different.

“Qa’rraan can do a ton of different things,” Roberts said. “He can shoot the three, he can drive to the basket, he can pass it.”

Roberts said he saw Calhoun score 22 points, grab eight rebounds and make four threes while playing the other night for Bridgton Academy, a prep school in Maine.

The 6-foot-8, 220-pound combo forward was rated as the fifth best postgraduate player in the nation by Scout.com and is also known as a shot blocker. While at Raritan High School in Hazlet, N.J., Calhoun posted back-to-back games of 28 and 27 points against St. Patrick’s and St. Anthony’s, respectively.

“I can’t wait to come to St. John’s next season,” Calhoun said. “Every time I visited campus, I felt more welcome.”

Calhoun’s signing comes two weeks after St. John’s lost the verbal commitment of high school point guard Doug Wiggins. Calhoun averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks per game at Raritan.

“Qa’rraan is one of the most coachable players I have ever had,” his high school coach Sean Devaney said. “It’s extremely rare to find someone so talented and yet so coachable.”
