The Red Storm lacrosse team traveled to Lewisburg, PA this past Sunday for their season opener against the Bucknell Bison. Despite a strong individual showing by many of St. John’s players, the team lost the game 10-4.
Early in the game, the Red Storm’s Justin O’Donnell scored the first goal of the match off an assist from Felix Forbes. It would be the last time St. John’s would have the lead, as four minutes later, Bucknell’s Austin Winter scored an unassisted goal on Red Storm goalie Dave Saccente.
The Bison scored twice more in the first quarter and three times in the second, bringing their lead to 6-1. St. John’s junior Graeme Gillespie then scored off a pass from sophomore Tom Manes, giving the Red Storm a much-needed lift before halftime.
In the third quarter, sophomore Drew Schanen scored another goal for St. John’s off an up-field pass from junior Jack Rosson, bringing the score to 7-3.
But the Red Storm could not keep up with the hot Bucknell offense. Bison junior Nick Marks, sophomore Perry Mezies, and Doug Buckley all scored unassisted goals, helping the Bison win the game 10-4.
