A week after recruiting highly touted prospect Yohana Fami, the St. John’s women’s basketball team has agreed to terms on a deal with reigning Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Sixth Player of the Year, Sanaa Tripp.
“Sanaa is the type of player who brings instant energy and impact every time she steps on the floor,” head coach Joe Tartamella said in a press release on April 23.
The incoming transfer from Belmont University is the fourth player to join the Johnnies 2026-27 recruiting class. Tripp broke out in her sophomore season, posting 7.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.4 per game. She made eight starts in 32 appearances, becoming a key contributor to the starting lineup in a limited role.
The rising junior recorded double-figures 11 times, including a career 25-point performance against Northern Iowa. During the Jan. 11 game, Tripp went 9-for-11 from the field, making five-of-her six three-point attempts. She also recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career high 15 rebounds against Valparaiso.
On the defensive end, Tripp forced three or more steals in five games, including five against Lipscomb. She maintained a consistent presence on the glass, snagging at least three rebounds in 15 contests.
“Her ability to score, defend and make plays on both sides of the floor at a high-level fits the identity of our team,” Tartamella added.
In her freshman campaign, Tripp appeared in all 39 games, averaging 14.5 minutes per game. She scored in double figures four times, playing an instrumental role in Belmont’s run to the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament (WBIT) Championship Game. Other notable accomplishments include scoring in double figures twice in the postseason.
Brooke Moore and Sa’Mya Wyatt headline next year’s version of the Red Storm. The addition of Tripp brings depth, length and size to their roster alongside incoming freshmen Serenity Lancaster, Syvannah Dawson and Fami.
