St. John’s Women’s Tennis Breezes by Fairfield in Home-Opener

In their home opener at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., the St. John’s women’s tennis team shut out Fairfield 7-0 in, newly hired coach, Lauren Leo’s home debut. The Red Storm improved to 2-0 in the season following the win on Friday afternoon, while the Stags dropped to 0-1.

The Red Storm dominated the doubles matchups to start the day with a combined score of 18 games to 2. Junior Natallia Vavulina and ophomore Zofia Stanisz won the No.1 doubles position matchup by shutting out Fairfield’s Nicole Aragones and Courtney Connors 6-0. St. John’s unior, Stephanie Elgegren and freshman Delia Arranz followed that up with a 6-1 win over Karen McKheough and Meghan Zimmer at the No. 2 doubles position. Junior Anna Morozova and Sophomore Irina Preotescu helped the Red Storm sweep the doubles matchups with an easy 6-1 win for the No. 3 doubles position.

The results were very similar in the singles matchups. St. John’s Vavulina was victorious during the No.1 single matchup by a score of 6-1, 6-2. At the No.2 spot Morozova won in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. St. John’s freshman, Olaya Inclan, also won at the No.3 position by defeating Zimmer 6-1, 6-0.

To finish off the day, No.4 Elgegren defeated Courtney Connors 6-0, 6-1 while No.5 Preotescu, and No.6 Stanisz each won their respective matchups 6-0, 6-0. Out of the 97 games played, the Johnnies only lost 7 of them.

After the matches, Coach Leo talked about how her team performed. “Our whole team did a solid job of executing today’s game plan. Everyone showed great composure and focus from start to finish during this match.”

Next up for the Red Storm is a matchup on the road against the UMass Minutemen at the Bay Road Tennis Center in Amherst, Mass. on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 12:30 p.m.
