The NCAA offseason is in full swing with the recruiting period ongoing. The St. John’s women’s basketball team used this time to sign highly-touted Canadian prospect, Yohana Fami, on April 16.
“We are excited about the addition of Yohana to our program. She is one of the top prospects coming out of Canada in the 2026 class,” Head Coach Joe Tartamella said in a press release.
The latest addition to the Johnnies’ recruiting class last played for the Royal Crown School in Ontario, which went on to win the 2026 Ontario Scholastic Basketball Championship (OSBA).
Fami established herself as one of the top prospects in Canada by being named a 2025 OSBA First Team All-Star. She was also named a second Team All-Star in 2024. Fami was named the MVP on the Grind Session circuit en route to leading Royal Crown to a championship. In the tournament final, she led her team with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals.
“Her length and versatility fit exactly how we want to play on the offensive and defensive end of the floor. She is a hardworking blue-collar player that Johnny fans will love,” Tartamella added.
The duo of Brooke Moore and Sa’Mya Wyatt headlines St. John’s roster, but Fami adds more experience to their lineup, as she competed for Team Canada at the 2024 FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup. In that national tournament, she averaged 6.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game.
Other notable accomplishments include participating in the 2024 Nike Future Games and earning a spot in the 2026 All-Canadian Games.
Fami is the third addition to the Red Storm’s rookie recruiting class, which includes Serenity Lancaster and Syvannah Dawson.
