1) Trump posters: In November, a series of Trump posters hung on dorm windows in Century hall sparked outrage among some students. In response, some students hung a Barack Obama poster, a gay pride flag and a “Love Trumps Hate” sign. Other students hung similar Trump posters in their windows as the semester progressed.
Suzanne Ciechalski is a senior journalism major with a minor in government and politics. In her second year as EIC, she hopes to continue increasing the Torch’s editorial content by spanning coverage to include news within the local community outside of SJU, and breaking news. She also hopes to expand the Torch’s visibility by building on the paper’s online presence and by reaching out to students through stories, journalism workshops and other events. Before graduating, she hopes to instill an element of community service within the Torch by reaching out to local high schools about how the Torch can help them build on their current newspaper, or develop one. Suzanne has been with the Torch for three years, previously serving as the opinion editor and as a staff writer.
Managing Editor, Photo Editor: Gina is a senior Photojournalism major/Environmental Science minor who intends to increase the Torch's readership and open up its market by producing broader coverage of St. John's. As the former Art Director, she also hopes to vastly improve the design of the paper in a way that makes it more engaging, and reader-friendly. [email protected]
Steven Verdile is a senior graphic design major. He spent his first two years as a design assistant, and is entering his second year as Design Editor. He hopes to increase readership by designing engaging issues and creating dynamic online and social media content.
Amanda Negretti is a senior Advertising major who plans to graduate this fall. In her time at the Torch, she has been a photographer, Photo Editor, Creative Director, and now our Managing Editor. She will be starting as a Digital Intern at NBC in the fall. Her main goal for the year is to ensure consistency and increase coverage on all the Torch's platforms.
