It’s been an up-and-down year for New York professional sports teams. With the Rangers just inches short of reaching its second consecutive Stanley Cup and the Mets falling in the World Series, one New York team came out a champ this past weekend.

The Cosmos won its second Soccer Bowl of the modern era this Sunday after defeating Ottawa Fury FC 3-2 at SHUART Stadium on Long Island in front of a record-setting crowd of 10,166.

Former St. John’s captain, Jimmy Mulligan was part of the Championship team played 297 minutes this season earning three starts in four games with the Cosmos.

The former midfielder who played in 80 matches over four seasons for the Red Storm while scoring eight goals and dished out nine assists, spoke to current St. John’s captain Gabriel Camara about his experience with the Cosmos.

“I went to the game last weekend in the Cosmos win during the semifinals, said Camara, “I got the chance to talk to him and He tells me, how good they were feeling about that final game.

“The team is very good, said Mulligan. “He kept telling me, how lucky he was with playing legends like Raul and Marco Senna, who won a Champions League, EuroCup.”

“I’m very happy for Jimmy, he’s work hard in his time here, said Camara. “He was one of the best captains I ever had in my life. Worked hard, was the first one to get into practice, the last one to leave and he was very good captain because he always pushed the freshmen’s who worked harder and harder every day.”

After the celebration, legendary Real Madrid star, Raúl González Blanco, walked out a champion to solidify his 22nd trophy who ranks as one of the most decorated players in Spanish football.

“I’m very proud for everything I did and thank you to the club, my teammates and the fans for this amazing year, said the 38-year old Spaniard. For me now, I start a new life with another project. I’m happy, but I’m also very sad.”

After hoisting the Soccer Bowl trophy in 2015, the Cosmos will look to remain on top as the 2016 Season tickets are already on display.
