The fencing team was on the road again this past weekend. Its travels took them to Ontario, California to compete at the North American Cup.
SJU had five individuals post top-10 finishes, which pleased Head Coach Yury Gelman. “The ability to perform at this level shows that you can compete at the top level on the college level,” he said n a press release.
Sophomore Ivan Lee took the gold medal in the sabre. He defeated his teammate Keeth Smart 15-13. Both fencers each won five 15-touch matches to reach the championship.
“It’s great for Ivan,” Smart said. “If I’m going to lose to anyone, I’d want it to be him.”
Other top ten finishes included Doron Levit who finished in fifth place in the epee.
For the women’s team, freshman Irina Khouade finished third in the foil, and junior Marisa Mustilli finished in ninth place in the sabre.
Next up for the fencing team is the NAC Junior Open in Greenville, South Carolina on Jan. 12.
