Around the Big East

Men’s Soccer

UConn and Notre Dame had a strong showing this week in part to Defensive Player of the Week Mpho Mol and Chris Cahill, who was the Goalkeeper of the Week. Mol, a senior, helped the Huskies to a 2-0 win over UNC-Greensboro and a 2-1 victory over George Mason.

At the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament, Cahill held his opponents scoreless in two 1-0 wins over Boston University and St Louis. The Irish took home the tournament trophy and Cahill was named to the all-tournament team.

Women’s Soccer

On the women’s side, Jessica Mello and Deana Waintraub (Louisville), Jenny Mulvihill (USF), and Katie Kelly (Marquette) were honored for their play this week. The Big East Defensive Player of the Week went to Mello, a freshman who helped guide the Cardinals to a 5-1-0 start.

Mello’s teammate and classmate Weintraub was named the Goalkeeper of the Week.

Marquette’s Kelly, another freshman, was named the Rookie of the Week.

Among her accomplishments was notching her second game-winning goal of the year in a game over Xavier (2-1).

The lone senior on the list of honorees, Muvihill, was named the Offensive Player of the Week for her superb play on the field.

She recorded a total of five goals in South Florida’s victories against Stetson (2-0), Mercer (2-0), and Longwood (3-1). Mulivihill currently leads USF in scoring with 12 points.

Volleyball

Nationally-ranked Notre Dame (19) was on a roll this week, upsetting two top-10 teams at the UTSA Dome Rally Championship. The Irish defeated No. 8 Southern Cal and No. 6 Florida in part thanks to the play of senior Lauren Brewster.

For the week, Brewster registered 18 blocks and 52 kills, which included a 20-kill, seven-block outing against Florida en route to being named the conference Player of the Week.

The Rookie of the Week award went to Alona Cherkez of Villanova.

She helped lead the Wildcats to a 5-0 start which leads the conference.

Cherkez was also named MVP of the Villanova Volleyball Classic.
