St. John’s fencers looking toward the ’08 Olympics

With impressive performances over the weekend, some Red Storm fencing stars took further steps toward eventual appearances at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The Red Storm had four top 25 finishers in Division I and two top 20 NAC Junior finishers at the NAC Division I Junior Olympic Trials at the Georgia World Congress Center on Jan. 18-21.

Senior captain Luther Clement followed up his ninth place finish at last month’s trials with a 20th place in the Division I sabre. Senior Henry Kennard finished 23rd in the foil, while freshman Brenden Meyers finished 11th and junior Stan Vaksman 12th in the Junior Division epee.

Sophmore Tanya Novakovska had the best weekend of all the Johnnies.

She placed third in the Division I epee after a second place showing in the same event last month.

Senior Martyna Wieczorek finished 18th in the junior sabre.
