Volleyball improves record to 10-1 after Hofstra sweep

The St. John’s volleyball team is off to its best start in team history and Wednesday night they showcased why.

The Red Storm swept Long Island rival Hofstra Pride 3-0 to defend their Queens/Nassau County Cup championship.

Head coach Joanne Persico-Smith attributes St. John’s winning ways to a healthy team-oriented philosophy.

“We have great teamwork, work ethic, leadership, and experience,” Persico-Smith said.

The Storm (10-1) came out flying against the Pride (5-5), taking the first and second games by scores of 30-22 and 30-23, respectively. But it was in the final game of the match where the Red Storm really showcased their ability, dominating Hofstra by a score of 30-14 for the sweep.

St. John’s was led by Patti Hardimon, who had 15 kills, and former rookie of the year Hui Ping Huang with 12 kills.

St. John’s will start Big East play Sept. 22 at Pittsburgh and looks to go deep into the playoffs this year. Off to their hot start, it’s a real possibility that the team can see. But no one believes in that more then Persico-Smith.

“The only thing that can stop them is themselves,” she said.
