Men’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Lavin will give this year’s commencement speech, the University announced today.
“Steve Lavin has a great affinity with out student body and is a popular choice for this year’s Commencement Ceremonies,” University President Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. said in a statement from the University.
Lavin will first address the Staten Island graduates at their ceremonies on May 12. He will then speak to graduates on the Queens campus May 13, the release said.
The University will also honor the Very Rev. Perry Henry, C.m., D.Min., Bill Collins and Patricia Ann Norris McDonald at the May 13 ceremonies.
Lavin was hired to lead the Red Storm in 2010. In his first season as head coach, he led the team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002.
He sat out from coaching games this season while recovering from successful prostate cancer surgery. Lavin had announced he had prostate cancer in April 2011.
