Mangione appointed as permanent provost

After a unanimous decision by the board of trustees was made on Dec. 12, Dr. Robert Mangione will be appointed the new permanent provost, according to an internal University memo sent out today.

Mangione was appointed interim provost on Aug. 1 by Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of the University, after former provost Julie Upton announced last year she was returning to the position of faculty member at the University. In the meantime a provost search committee, led by Dr. Michael Simons, dean of the law school, launched a nationwide search for a permanent replacement.

In an interview with the Torch back in August, Mangione said his name was being considered for the permanent position. He had originally not planned to put his name in for consideration due to his wife being seriously ill at the time. After his wife recovered, Mangione was willing to take up the position as interim provost after being approached by Harrington.

Simons had told the Torch back in August that he originally planned to have a candidate for the permanent position ready for Harrington next semester.

Before being appointed the interim provost, Mangione had been the dean of the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions (now titled the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences) for thirteen years.
