Ian Stone, the head of the women’s soccer program at St. John’s for 13 years, was named the Big East Coach of the Year for 2006, his first time being recognized with the award. Taking the youngest team (15 freshmen) in the conference to a 10-5-4 record and matching up evenly with nationally ranked powerhouses West Virginia and Rutgers, Stone’s team is primed to build upon that success in upcoming seasons.
The Red Storm narrowly missed selection in this year’s NCAA tournament, despite their remarkable performance. Two freshmen, Vaila Barsley and Nicole Pasciolla, were named to the All Big East third team.
They will only lose one senior, leading scorer Natasha Lee, to graduation this year.
