Professor Elie Fleurant, a 1982 graduate of St. John’s Graduate School of Administration, will be on campus to sign his new book on Thursday. The book “A Coeur Nu” (Naked Heart) as he describes it, is in the form of “diaphanous poetry.”

An instructor and Senate Representative at Bronx Community College, City University of New York, Fleurant created Diaphanism.

“The concept of Diaphanism is derived from the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud and the Cartesian Theory,” Fleurant said.

Fleurant extended Descartes’ theory of “I think therefore I am,” to “I think, I reason, therefore I am real.”

“I expanded Descartes’ theory, because in order to live and be real, one should be able to reason,” Fleurant said. “For one to reach happiness in today’s society, [they] need to reach reality.”

Fleurant said that with the coming of the 21st century came a new era of violence in our society. Diaphanism is a response to that violence.

“We live in an age of technology. The gap between people is widening every day and we are being alienated from each other,” Fleurant said.

“We no longer have socialization of identity, reality and consciousness because of all the new technological advances. The only way to overcome this growing problem, is to apply my theory.”

Fleurant’s theory can be applied through more interaction and reasoning among different members of society.

The book signing will be from 12:15 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the St. John’s bookstore. All psychology majors are encouraged to attend.

“It is my way of giving back to the St. John’s community as an alumnus,” Fleurant said.
