Fencing Continues Winning Ways

The St. John’s fencing team continued their winning ways last weekend with a strong performance at the North American Cup in Ohio.

Two SJU fencers won their competitions while seven finished in the top-15 overall.

The Red Storm was led by Ivan Lee, a three-time All-American and two-time NCAA champion, who won the men’s sabre.

Senior Irina Khouade, a first-team All-American last season, led the way for the women with a win in the foil competition.

Other top finishers for the men included freshman Nitai Kfir, who tied for third in the foil, senior Anton Gurevich, who finished in eighth place in the epee and junior Darrin Whitmer, who finished in 11th place in the sabre.

On the women’s side, sophomore Christina Crane finished in sixth place in the sabre.

The event was the first of three North American Cups this season.

The NACs give athletes from around the world an opportunity to compete for a place on the United States team and compete at next year’s World Championships in Havana, Cuba.

The St. John’s fencing team will be back in action Jan. 15-16, when they travel to San Diego for a quad match against Stanford, Air Force, NYU and San Diego.
