The St. John’s fencing team opened the second half of its seasonwith two impressive performances in this weekend’s tournament atPenn State and New York University.
The men’s team improved its undefeated record to 7-0 at PennState on Saturday, sweeping all four of its matches including ahuge win over North Carolina, 24-3.
The women’s team also fared quite well in Saturday’s tournamentand split its four matches of the afternoon. The two wins postedagainst North Carolina and Duke boost its win total to five, yetthe two losses suffered to host Penn State (17-10) and Penn wereits first of the season.
The Red Storm maintained its winning form in Sunday’s NYUInvitational in lower Manhattan. The men’s team once again sweptthe competition, handing powerhouse Ohio State its first loss ofthe season and improved the Storm’s record to 9-0 overall.
Standout performances by sophomore Sergey Isayenko and seniorDarrin Whitmer helped the men’s team win all but one of its matchesfor the tournament.
In women’s action, the Red Storm beat host NYU and Yale but lostto Notre Dame (18-9) and Ohio State (17-10).
The saber team of Christina Crane, Julia Gelman and KasiaWieronski led the way, winning 27 of 36 matches. Gelman finishedthe day 10-2, while Amy Delahanty led the foil level with a 10-2record as well.
The Red Storm returns to match play on Jan. 31, squaring offagainst Columbia, Princeton and Rutgers to close out the regularseason.
