Men’s golf wins Tillinghast

The St. John’s men’s golf team hosted the Tillinghast tournament Oct. 17 and 18 and took first place as a team, first place individually (Keegan Bradley) and tied two members for second place individually.

Finishing with a combined score of 591 strokes, St. John’s was 11 strokes under second place Villanova (602). Cincinnati (609) rounded out the top three.

Bradley (144) captured first place, coming back from fourth place after the first round.

It is the third time Bradley has been the Red Storm’s top scorer and the second time he has won first place.

George Zolotas (147), who had led after the first round with a 71 tied with teammate, Kevin Velardo (147) who carded 71 in the second round.

The two St. John’s golfers shared second place with St. Thomas Aquinas’ Patrick Cibirka (147). Brian McArdle (153) tied for 15th overall while Casey Calmi (77, WD) was lost after the first round because of a wrist injury.

Second-place Villanova was led by Colin Mahoy (150) who finished ninth overall and three other top-20 golfers.

Third place Cincinnati was led by fifth place Geoff Newman (148) and 14th place Adam Fluty (152) who carded a day’s low of 70 in the second round. Gonzaga (619) and Iona (620) came in fourth and fifth respectively.

The Red Storm gets back to action Nov. 5 and 6 in Orlando, Fla. for the Big East-MAC Challenge.
