Around the Big East

Many of the premier men’s soccer teams in the Big East competed this past season. UConn downed Georgetown, 5-0, in Connecticut. The Huskies got two goals from freshman Stephen Cenatiempo off the bench.

St. John’s will head to Connecticut to face the Huskies on Friday in a battle between two Big East heavyweights.

Providence and nationally ranked Seton Hall faced off this weekend, as well. The two teams battled to a 2-2 tie, with Providence eventually winning in penalty kicks.

Additionally, South Florida beat West Virginia 4-1. USF got two goals and an assist from forward Rodrigo Hidalgo.

South Florida will face Providence in Storrs before the St. John’s and UConn game.

The winners of these two games will battle for the Big East championship on Sunday. The title game will also be held in Storrs.

Women’s Soccer

The Big East women’s champion is Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish got through Marquette, then Connecticut, to win the title.

The Lady Huskies squeaked by West Virginia, 1-0, in Friday’s game.

The game was won on the leg of Kathleen Frank, who scored the game’s only goal.

The Lady Irish shutout Marquette, 3-0, on Friday led by Kerri Hanks who had a goal and an assist. In the finals, Notre Dame ran over UConn, 5-0.

Hanks had another goal in a balanced effort by the Irish. Erika Bohn, the goalkeeper for the Irish notched both shutouts. All four of these teams earned spots in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament.
