HAT TRICK

Three members of the St. John’s men’s soccer team were recently selected to play professionally.

Major League Soccer (MLS) had its SuperDraft on Friday in Philadelphia. The third round of the draft saw graduate student Matt Groenwald and senior Andre Schmid taken by Kansas City and Houston, respectively. Senior Jeff Carroll was taken in the fourth round by DC United.

The 28th pick overall, Groenwald finishes his St. John’s career with 15 goals and 22 assists for 53 points. This past season, he led the team with 17 points. He was selected to the first-team Big East and first-team Academic All-America in each of his past three seasons.

The 32nd pick overall, Schmid closes out his college career having scored 16 goals and 15 assists for 47 points. Schmid amassed at least 12 points per season and averaged 15 per year.

Finally, the 39th pick overall, Carroll ends his St. John’s tenure having started every one of the 22 games this past season and 84 in his career. Carroll contributed to an excellent St. John’s defense. The team has recorded 10 or more shutouts in each year since Carroll’s freshman season in 2002.
