Volleyball adds another win to record year

Hui Ping Huang and the women’s volleyball team are rolling. Led by her double-double against Connecticut on Saturday afternoon, St. John’s won 3-0 and improved its record to 21-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 against Big East teams.

Huang had a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs. The first game was all her as the Huskies (13-8, 2-4) took the first point but the sophomore tied it up and helped the Red Storm take a 3-1 lead. Aided by services aces by Wioleta Leszczynska, Huang recorded the last kill of the game to take the first round 30-25.

Connecticut came out ready for the second round, gaining a quick 5-1 lead on kills by Devon Farrell.

St. John’s fought back, however, and was able to knot it up at 16-16. St. John’s went on to take it 30-27.

Game three appeared to be the closest contest for its first half but in the end, proved to be St. John’s exclamation point on their win. After the Storm tied it at 17, 20-19 was the closest the Huskies would remain. St. John’s went on to take the game 30-24 on Dana DeMayo’s kill.

Senior Patti Hardimon notched her ninth double-double of the season with 13 kills and a 13 digs. Junior Latoya Blunt recorded 11 kills and a match-high .550 hitting percentage. For Connecticut, freshman Farrel had a team-best 12 kills and 13 digs. Setter Bridget Denson-Dorman recorded a match-high 43 assists.
