Volleyball Sweeps Again

Hui Ping Huang, the reigning Big East player of the week, looked like she wanted to repeat her honors with her outstanding play on Sunday afternoon. Led by her double-double against Notre Dame, St. John’s improved its record to 22-1 on the season and 7-0 against Big East teams.

Huang had a match-high 16 kills in the victory. The first game came down to the wire with St. John’s winning 32-30, as it started and ended with kills from Huang. Leading by one point, Notre Dame looked as if they were going to take the game but the Red Storm prevailed over the last few serves.

In the second game, St. John’s came out more aggressive with two early kills. The Fighting Irish, however, would remain close behind with solid efforts from Serinity Phillips, and freshman Megan Fesl, but were unable to take the lead. With Patti Hardimon and Caitlin Rimgaila on their “A” game in the second game, the Red Storm won on an Irish attacking error, 30-24.

Leading 2-0, St. John’s went point for point with Notre Dame in the third match with Notre Dame, tying the score 10 times before St. John’s was able to break away. As the Red Storm started winning, the Fighting Irish wouldn’t be able to make a comeback and the Red Storm finished the third game with a score of 30-22, notching another sweep.
“We played extremely well in a very tough environment,” coach Joanne Persico-Smith said.
