Night of music on the Great Lawn

A crowd of 1,500 gathered on the Great Lawn on Thursday, August 2, for St. John’s Ninth Annual Summer Concert. This year’s performance, entitled “Remembered Music and Song from Great
Movies,” featured The Queens Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Constantine Kitsopoulos.

The orchestra played music from various films, including: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bridge on the River Kwai, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The King and I, and Carousel. The Office of Community Relations presented this year’s concert, which was sponsored by ConEd, Coca Cola, Jamaica
Chamber of Commerce, Assemblyman Rory Lancman, and Skyline Commons.

Additional support for the event came from City Council members David Weprin, James Gennaro, Tony Avella and Melinda Katz, student volunteers, Queens Symphony Orchestra volunteers, the St. John’s University Offices of Facilities, Special Events and Public Safety and the New York City Parks Department.

“We were blessed to have a beautiful night of weather and a record turnout from the community to enjoy a spectacular concert given by the Queens Symphony Orchestra,” said Joseph Sciame, St. John’s University’s Vice President for Community Relations, according to a university press
release.

He added, “St. John’s is grateful to so many community members for making this night such a huge success.”
