Over the past month St. John’s athletics has racked up various awards, most recently highlighted by the selection of Wioleta Lesczynska (volleyball) and Tara Mendoza (woman’s soccer) to the Big East weekly honor roll.
Leszcynska, a senior setter, has been instrumental in the success of the 14-2 squad that has continued to climb the ladder of national rankings, last week getting as high as No. 21. She leads the Big East in assists this season with 731.
Leszcynska was phenomenal this past week, averaging 14.67 assists and 1.58 digs in a four-game stretch when the squad went undefeated, which included winning both the Queens/Nassau Cup and the Indiana University/Adidas Classic.
The soccer team has been equally successful with sophomore Tara Mendoza leading the way. Mendoza has been the backbone of the Red Storm defense which has allowed only four goals this season.
Recently at the University of Buffalo Classic, Mendoza helped St. John’s post two shutouts, while almost lifting the squad over Maine when her shot hit the cross bar with less than a minute remaining.
The 5-0-1 squad has been quietly climbing the Soccer Buzz Magazine polls and has been ranked as high as third in the Northeast region.
