Johnnies take first loss to WV

Off to its best start in 15 years, St. John’s women’s soccer was unable to overcome No. 23 West Virginia, resulting in a 2-0 loss in the Johnnies second Big East matchup.

Four minutes in, Deanna Everrett put the Mountaineers on the board early with a goal. The half would end 1-0 in the Mountaineers favor.

Looking to add a spark, St. John’s changed goalkeepers for the second half, placing Junior Rebecca Capinera in the net.

Despite her presence, 55 minutes into the second half, West Virginia’s Carolyn Blank headed a goal in off of a corner kick.
Capinera finished with four saves during the half, while her counterpart Jaime Beran finished with five in the previous half.
Sophomore Kelly McConnell and Maria DeMateo attempted to keep the Red Storm streak alive with one shot each at the Mountaineers goal, which saw only three shots for the entire game.

The Mountaineers out shot St. Johns by 19 attempts during the lopsided contest. The loss was the first time the Red Storm was shut-out this season after its season opener against Stony Brook, which ended in a 0-0 draw.

With the loss, the Red Storm’s record drops to 6-1-2 overall, 1-1 in the Big East prior to its third Big East matchup on Sunday.

St. John’s will be back in action with three consecutive home games, all of them Big East contests. The Johnnies will look to improve on its record at home where it has yet to lose a game at Belson Stadium this year.

St. John’s will face Pittsburgh on Sunday followed by visits from DePaul and Notre Dame during the week.
