St. John’s volleyball wins first Big East Championship

St. John’s volleyball made history last weekend, as the team won its first Big East Championship.

With the victories in the tournament, St. John’s improved its record to 31-3 and has moved up in the national rankings to No.18.

“I’m very proud of the way our team performed to beat a talented and powerful Louisville volleyball team to win our first ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship,” coach Joanne Persico-Smith told redstormsports.com

After advancing through UConn and USF in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, St. John’s faced Louisville in the finals. The Johnnies showed some muscle and proved why it is a nationally ranked program, sweeping the Cardinals 3-0

Big East Championship MVP Wioleta Leszczynska carried St. John’s with 54 assists in the finals.

St. John’s will now look ahead to the NCAA Tournament, where they clinched a seed with the Big East Tournament win. Selection for the NCAA Tournament will take place on Sunday, November 25.
