St. John’s women’s basketball lost a heartbreaker on the road at McDonough Arena to the Georgetown Hoyas, 61-60, last Wednesday.

Junior guard Monique McLean led the way for the Red Storm with 23 points and four rebounds while fellow junior guard, reserve Kelly McManmon, added 13 points. Sophomore forward Joy McCorvey was a force on the defensive end, picking up eight rebounds and a steal.

The Red Storm led for most of the first half due to solid play by McManmon and McLean. McManmon scored eight unanswered points to put the Red Storm up 14-6, while McLean sparked a 13-5 run. A McLeon three pointer would give the Red Storm their biggest lead of the first half, 30-17. The Hoyas would fight back to end the half on a 7-0 run.

The Red Storm started the second half on a positive note by jumping out to a 41-28 lead, but the Hoyas would slowly climb back into the game, and eventually cut the lead to four at the 6:57 mark.

Hoyas guard Meredith Cox was the main reason of comeback. The sophomore scored all 13 of her points in the second half.
Georgetown would eventually take back the lead at the 2:31 mark and trade baskets with the Red Storm for the final two minutes.

Monique McLean hit a three pointer with 57 seconds left to give the Red Storm their final lead of the game, 57-55.

Georgetown responded with a three pointer from freshman Karee Houlette to take the lead at the 00:37 mark and never look back.Two key turnovers in the final seconds of the game hurt any chances of a possible comeback for the Red Storm. Freshman Sky Lindsay connected on a three pointer with .04 seconds left to get the Red Storm within one, 61-60, but it was too little too late for St. John’s.
