Campus Spotlight: Caleb Fleurant

Caleb Fleurant’s life is a miracle. From the time he was in his mother’s womb he was a fighter, destined to do great things. Even after doctors told his mother he wouldn’t survive, she continued to have faith. Now, 21 years later, he calls himself a child of promise because he believes God spared his life.

As a student at St. John’s University, Fleurant is doing great things to make sure that his college life is successful. Fleurant, a senior and communication arts major, is involved in some of the campus’ student organizations and activities, where he demonstrates leadership. On campus, he devotes his time to the Haitian Society, Voices of Victory gospel choir, and the Communications Club. He is also the CPS Senior Class representative.

Of these organizations, the one Fleurant especially takes pride in is the gospel choir.

“The choir gives me inspiration, motivation to do well,” Fleurant said. “It’s a wonderful ministry.”

He serves as the chaplain of Voices of Victory, where he leads devotion and offers prayer for the members of the choir. Not only has being a student at St. John’s offered a great campus experience, but Fleurant was able to see what life was like outside of the country. Last semester, he was given the opportunity to travel to Rome, Italy with the study abroad program.

While in Rome, Fleurant learned to speak some Italian. Although he does not speak Italian fluently, it is just another language that he can add to his list. Fleurant who comes from a Haitian background, speaks fluent Creole and French. “It was a wonderful experience overall,” Fleurant said. “The whole learning experience was different, but I enjoyed it.”

Aside from his activities and experiences with the University, he enjoys many other things. When he is not busy with his campus life, Fleurant enjoys listening to music, particularly gospel, R&B, and hip-hop, playing basketball, and reading. His favorite artist of all times is the late Notorious B.I.G, and rap mogul Jay-Z. His favorite book is Gifted Hands by Ben Carson.

The senior has sketched a map of what he wants to do after he graduates. He wants to continue his education by attending graduate school.

With all his success and accomplishments, Fleurant owes all his thanks to the person who has been most influential in his life: his mother. It was her persistence and strong will that has inspired him to do well and to achieve nothing less than the best. She taught him that with having a strong faith in God, anything is possible, and Caleb is her living proof of that.

Once he is done fulfilling his educational goals, Fleurant hopes to be a successful business man, and he wants to give back to his community. He will continue to strive for great things because it is just in his nature.

Just like he fought in the beginning of his life, he will continue to fight for whatever he wants in life. After all, he is a child of promise and is destined to do great things.
